Established in 1981, Kwai Chung Hospital (KCH) is a psychiatric hospital in Kowloon West Cluster (KWC), providing psychiatric care to those with mental health problems in Kwai Chung, Tsing Yi, Tsuen Wan, North Lantau districts as well as Mong Kok, Sham Shui Po and Wong Tai Sin districts.
Over the years, the global trends in treatment and management of mental health services have been evolving while the need for psychiatric service has been increasing due to population growth and ageing. However, the conditions of facilities and physical setting of KCH have become outdated after several decades of heavy utilization and the hospital lacks the capacity to adopt modern delivery of psychiatric care.
In 2013 Policy Address, the Government announced the plan to redevelop KCH so as to render more targeted care and support to mental patients.
The redevelopment of KCH will be carried out in three phases. Phase 1 of the redevelopment project involved the construction of a decantation building at the existing car park area of Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) and renovation works at Blocks L/M and J of KCH as well as Block N and Nursing School and Quarters of PMH for decanting purposes. The related works commenced in mid-2016 and was completed in July 2018.
The scope of the phases 2 and 3 of the redevelopment project comprises the following :
Phase 2- Demolition of all existing buildings of KCH except Blocks L/M and J;
- Construction of a new Main Block and Child Block;l
- Construction of a lift tower on Lai King Hill Road with a link bridge to connect the Main Block of the redeveloped KCH;
- Alteration and addition works to areas in PMH affected by the proposed redevelopment works of KCH;
Phase 3
- Demolition of Blocks L/M for the construction of a therapeutic/rehabilitation garden.
