United Christian Hospital (UCH) was opened in 1973. The construction of Blocks J, K, L and S, and the redevelopment of Block P were implemented under an extension project completed in 1999. It provides a wide range of acute, ambulatory, extended care and community medical services to the residents of Kwun Tong and Sai Kung Districts.
The existing facilities in UCH are inadequate in terms of space, capacity and design to cope with the rising service demand in Kowloon East, the present-day service standard as well as future service requirement. Hence there is a need to improve and enhance the facilities in UCH to expand its service capacity.
The expansion project will be implemented in two stages, comprising preparatory works and main works. The preparatory works include site surveys and investigations, and decanting works, etc. The main works, on the other hand, include:
- Demolition of existing Blocks F, G, and H, and low block of Block P;
- Construction of a new ambulatory block (Block A);
- Construction of an extension to Block S and the auxiliary electrical and mechanical building;
- Construction of linkages between hospital blocks;
- refurbishment of Blocks P and S for expansion of facilities;
- associated external works, landscaping, utilities diversion, roadworks, and formation of new vehicular access;
- other associated alteration and addition works inside existing blocks;
- construction of pedestrian linkages to neighbouring site; and
- refurbishment of Blocks K and L after removal of decanted facilities and demolition of the decanting buildings.
Upon completion, the Hospital will have increased space and upgraded facilities to improve, expand and rationalize the clinical services. More importantly, the Hospital will develop an Oncology Centre to provide one-stop services including radiotherapy, chemotherapy and psycho-social care to cancer patients in the districts.
The preparatory works commenced in 2012 with the demolition and substructure works completed in 2020. This is followed by the superstructure and refurbishment works which were commenced in September 2020. The construction will be completed in phases starting from 2025.
