The first phase of North Lantau Hospital (NLTH)’s construction commenced in 2010. The project was instigated in light of the development of the North Lantau New Town (covering Tung Chung) and the population growth in the district, as well as the demand for medical services arising from infrastructure development in the district including the Hong Kong International Airport and some major tourist facilities.
Phase 1 of the project mainly included the construction of a main block. The main block is comprised of a C-shaped, seven-storey building atop a single storey podium, with provision for ambulatory care services including an accident and emergency department, specialist out-patient clinics, primary care clinics, a day rehabilitation centre and an ambulatory surgery centre. The in-patient and out-patient services are well supported by diagnostic and treatment facilities including an emergency laboratory, radiology suite equipped with computed tomography scan, ultrasound scanner as well as a blood bank.
The design of NLTH is based upon a patient-centred philosophy, creating a spacious and tranquil environment to facilitate patient’s rehabilitation and enable health care professionals to deliver high quality patient care efficiently.
The design of the hospital also demonstrates our commitment to environmental protection. Glass wall has been extensively and effectively used in order to bring in maximum natural light, and solar panels have been installed on the roof to reduce the consumption of non-renewable energy sources. The purpose-built garden rooftop not only provides a “greener” environment but also a beautiful and relaxing area for patient rehabilitation.
The construction was completed in December 2012, and the hospital commenced the first phase of patient service in September 2013.
