Opened in 1990, Tuen Man Hospital (TMH) is a major acute hospital of the New Territories West Cluster (NTWC) of the Hospital Authority (HA), providing a comprehensive range of specialty services at secondary and tertiary levels for Tuen Mun and Yuen Long districts. Over the years, the population of the two districts has grown rapidly.

TMH provides a full range of acute, ambulatory, extended care and community medical services. Operating a 24-hour accident and emergency (A&E) department, it also serves as a tertiary referral centre for trauma and neurosurgery for NTWC, carrying out most of the ultra-major and major operations in NTWC.

Demand for the services of TMH, in particular surgical services, has been constantly high. Apart from the long waiting time for elective surgery, the 11 operating theatres (OT) in TMH are lagging behind the current international standards in terms of space requirement and facilities. In addition, the A&E department has not undergone any major renovation since its establishment in 1990, and its capacity is inadequate to meet the overwhelming demand as well as modern standards for the delivery of emergency care. The adjoining radiology department is also in need of an expansion in order to facilitate prompt diagnosis for patients seeking emergency care.
In view of the projected population growth in the catchment districts as well as TMH’s status as the major acute hospital and tertiary referral centre for NTWC, there is a genuine need to expand the hospital’s operating theatre facilities, A&E department and radiology department. In order to maintain the operating services of the hospital at all times, the expansion project is implemented in two stages, namely the substructure and utilities diversion works and the main works.

The main works of the project mainly comprise:
  1. Construction of an OT extension block over the open car-parking area to accommodate 20 OTs, intensive care unit and associated supporting areas;
  2. Construction of a link bridge to connect the extension block with the existing OT Block; and
  3. Expansion of the existing A&E department and radiology department, as well as refurbishment of the existing OT Block, A&E department and radiology department to integrate with the extension block for coherent workflows.
The substructure and utilities diversion works have commenced since May 2016 and were completed in March 2018. Main works commenced in September 2017 and the construction of new OT extension block was completed in 2022 while the remaining works and alteration and addition works are in progress.
