Opened in 1990, Tuen Man Hospital (TMH) is a major acute hospital of the New Territories West Cluster (NTWC) of the Hospital Authority (HA), providing a comprehensive range of specialty services at secondary and tertiary levels for Tuen Mun and Yuen Long districts. Over the years, the population of the two districts has grown rapidly.
TMH provides a full range of acute, ambulatory, extended care and community medical services. Operating a 24-hour accident and emergency (A&E) department, it also serves as a tertiary referral centre for trauma and neurosurgery for NTWC, carrying out most of the ultra-major and major operations in NTWC.
Demand for the services of TMH, in particular surgical services, has been constantly high. Apart from the long waiting time for elective surgery, the 11 operating theatres (OT) in TMH are lagging behind the current international standards in terms of space requirement and facilities. In addition, the A&E department has not undergone any major renovation since its establishment in 1990, and its capacity is inadequate to meet the overwhelming demand as well as modern standards for the delivery of emergency care. The adjoining radiology department is also in need of an expansion in order to facilitate prompt diagnosis for patients seeking emergency care.
